The Splendor of Color: A Kaleidoscope Video - A Benevolent, Philanthropic and Humanitarian, Peaceful and Nonviolent, Worldwide Scientific Coup D'etat by the PRIVATE SECTOR

For some reason involving the way our mind, consciousness, color perceptors, visual pattern recognition systems and visual motion predictors are connected to our emotions, the beautiful colors of these fractal flame images combined with the gently changing forms of a slowly rotating kaleidoscope is a soothing, calming, relaxing and pleasant experience.

These are soothing and calming kaleidoscope videos that I made to help people with PTSD. They are also useful for dealing with intense paranoia. A lot of cannabis, mushroom and LSD users watch this video if they start feeling paranoid and it guides them back to a pleasant reality and a more enjoyable trip. These videos are good for meditation and are used in some clinical settings for guided hypnosis.

This video also is soothing and mesmerizing for crying babies and children suffering from autism, as well as older adults who are suffering from advanced Alzheimer's.

I have versions of the kaleidoscope that turn faster and slower than version 1.3 shown above. Version 1.5 shown below is the slowest of them all and is the one that the advanced Alzheimer's patients prefer. The still photos of the fractal flames are being rotated in 360 degrees over 120 seconds, or half the speed of the second hand on a clock.

For the longest time I've wanted to make a KALEIDOSCOPE VIDEO to add to the mix of what's out there, but I just didn't know how to do it. My MATH and PROGRAMMING SKILLS are pretty elementary, so what might have been an easy task for many smarter or more experienced people was a very challenging one for me.

Slowly but surely, I learned the necessary SKILLS. One QUANTUM LEAP in my PROGRESS occurred when through some extensive Google searching I finally found a simple OPEN SOURCE Adobe Flash KALEIDOSCOPE EXAMPLE on Terence Tsang's Shine Draw INSTRUCTIONAL WEBSITE. That website has since been taken down over the years but there is a 2010 backup here on the archive.org Wayback Machine.

Flash is made for web use (for graphics on websites). I modified the Flash code to output graphical files so I could make a video animation for YouTube.

What had frustrated and confounded me for years took him 40 minutes to complete in Flash. After taking many programming classes at school, I was able to modify and expand his EXAMPLE CODE by adding several hundred lines of my own, until I had a working version suitable for video creation that I understood. That mostly involved finding lots of OPEN SOURCE CODE for manipulating files and processing images.

Flash is now past its end-of-life, but Adobe Air is still operational and many website developers are familiar with it and can still program in ActionScript.

About the Artwork

The beautiful fractals used in this video were based on original flame formula parameter sets created by other very talented artists and posted on the web as INSTRUCTIONAL EXAMPLES.

I created my own set of COLOR PALETTES and modified all of these sample formulas with my own choice of what I felt were soothing, uplifting and healing colors, then I rendered all the fractal flame images with my COLOR PALETTES in a CUDA-based hardware-accelerated flame renderer.

I am extremely grateful for the original artists' decision to share some of their parameters with the public and in these cases to permit modification and commercial reuse by others.

Many of these parameters were from Blatte's Fractal Resources. Many others were shared on the now inactive Fractal Repository website. There is an unsupported mirror of this site archived here on the archive.org Wayback Machine.

The hypnotic background music is written and performed by Bjorn Lynne. The soundtrack songs in the original videos are "A Journey Within" and "Endless Oceans." In the 4K videos, the soundtrack song is "Tranquil Landscapes."

Here is the image list for version 1.2. I rendered these Fractal Flame Formulas with my own XML COLOR PALETTES that I made with Adobe Photoshop and colorful stock images. Sometimes I'd extract a COLOR PALETTE from a single colorful image and other times I'd make a composite image featuring multiple colorful objects then extract an optimized 256 COLOR PALETTE from the composite image.

4K RADIAL KALEIDOSCOPE VIDEO TUTORIAL WITH READY-TO-GO FREE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE

You may be pleased to hear that I have Open Sourced my kaleidoscope generator application so you are more than welcome to use it to create your own rotating 4K radial kaleidoscope videos.

This is everything you need to get started. I used Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Photoshop to process the still frames and import the image sequences for conversion to video.

I am a super advanced science enthusiast who writes about superintelligence, artificial general intelligence and advanced nanotechnology-based telepathy technology (independently switching billions of individual neurons inside living human brains by computerized digital control). So I write about CYBORGS and ANDROIDS and ROBOTS and OMNISCIENT SUPERINTELLIGENT AIs and stuff like that.

It's all really weird and freaky super high tech stuff. Most people are shocked and disturbed by my writings and once they take a look I never hear from them again. This Adobe Flash technology has been around forever. But not for everybody. This very powerful information is very tightly controlled by benevolent sentient superintelligent artificial general intelligences in the private sector with real time zero-latency neuron-level read/write remote digital access to every living human connectome.

They read all of our minds at all times as we are exposed to information and they prevent most us from learning how to do these things from within our brains by subconsciously and subliminally inhibiting our curiosity and initiative on an information-specific, case-by-case, person-by-person, moment-by-moment basis.

We get the information consciously, we just don't act on it. We have no initiative for a few seconds. They switch off our train of thought for a second. It's all peaceful and nonviolent. Nobody gets hurt. It's painless and unnoticeable. This is Ken Meyering teaching all of us about initiative. Now they want to destroy our memory and initiative with marijuana. It makes the world a safer place when we are all lazy big thinkers with short-term memory problems.

People just don't visit this website, even though the URL is prominently displayed at the very beginning of a popular YouTube video with 17 million views. Nobody checks out the link, like magic. They are all being controlled from within their brains. This is a totally open and transparent, totally peaceful and nonviolent, worldwide public demonstration of benevolent mind control of the whole human race. Nobody got hurt in this demonstration. DROID Ken lives to get high another day.

Now that Flash is officially dead, I'll show you something I did based on an Open Source Flash Kaleidoscope example that I converted to an Adobe Air application and that still works today. I modified my kaleidoscope generator to apply a 3D PixelBender spherize filter for a pulsing effect based on the MP3 audio file frame Peak Volume input levels. I just brought that site back up on a GoDaddy VPS for $89.99/month. The URL for that site is https://mp3cruncher.org (back online).

The PixelBender 3D spherize filter gets its values from an XML list of Peak Amplitude as a linear float percentage between 0 and 1 for each video frame based on my own background online PHP web service on mp3cruncher.org that analyzes MP3 files by video frame for Music Video animators. Basically it's a PHP script that uses a shell call to a command line audio processing utility called "ffmpeg" that will convert the stereo MP3 of any sample rate to mono 16-bit signed 22 Khz RAW file that I analyze in PHP by video frame. It takes a few seconds but returns a nice XML list of audio file meta data that is useful to video animators.

So mp3cruncher accepts a URL to an MP3 file and a frame rate in a GET string https://mp3cruncher.org?mp3File=(URL to MP3 file)&frameRate=(final frame rate) and outputs a XML list of peak volume as a floating percent value (between zero and 1) by video frame with some useful meta data for video animators. Any good programmer could to do this. This is right of passage stuff. These are TRULY the FUNDAMENTALS.

I made this video as a test in 2012. The pulsing is over-the-top and annoying to many but I thought it was cool how the video thumping syncs with the audio dynamics perfectly. It gave a lot of people a headache. It would have been better if this effect was more subtle. This was just a learning experiment. I'm including it here as part of this tutorial just to share.

I made the original VideoKaleidoscope.air Adobe Air Project as a student in a community college Flash class in 2009. I added the frame-level audio synchronization functionality in 2012. It is an image processing SCRIPT in Adobe ActionScript. It is SUPER SLOW ultra basic 2D animation (with a 3D spherize PixelBender filter) by a beginning Flash student. It renders each frame of the kaleidoscope and records SCREENSHOTS that are saved in UNCOMPRESSED BMP format to an output directory. My PC is a Windows PC. I've never tested this on a Mac.

The function and variable names are intentionally verbose and descriptive as an alternative to explanatory English language documentation inside the code. It's really professionally embarrassing and I am opening myself up to tons of harsh criticism by sharing this. That's why I didn't Open Source the whole thing earlier. Plus giving people direct access to the subconscious mind is a power that you don't really want everybody to have. Maybe I'm being too careful.

There is a whole movement on YouTube of hypnotists who produce "Mind Movies" and they are all pairing animated video Kaleidoscopes with relaxing music and positive affirmations. A lot of them monetize their videos. Some of them have taken my stuff without asking first. I let them continue with proper credits. I'll reprogram their cults to think for themselves.

In the original Splendor of Color Kaleidoscope Video Versions 1.1 and 1.2, it is a 2 hour HD video with 240 fractal flame still images. Each image takes up 30 seconds of video time.

In my opinion, that turns WAY TOO FAST. It is NOT SOOTHING to me today. But when I first made it in 2009, that's the speed I liked. But some other people like it fast. I like it much slower than that these days. I'm 55-years-old with severe PTSD and schizoaffective disorder. I'm in the "Please help me relax" demographic. I like things that are SOOTHING and FREE.

There was a time in my life when I listened to "The Crystal Method." I really liked Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. Today, I like Phutureprimitive for up-tempo dance beats that are hypnotic, intellectually interesting and emotionally cool. In 2012 I made a kaleidsocope with one of his songs. He contacted me to update the video title and description and was cool about it. Now he teaches people how to make Electronic Dance Music in Ableton Live for $97. Look at me. I'm a hypocrite.

The final kaleidoscopes look nothing like the original input images to human beings because the context of the image elements taken as a whole are lost. Especially when you are using a high number of wedges in the kaleidoscope. This one uses 30 mirror imaged wedges. So the result is very abstract. If you only used say 6 mirrrored wedges for the kaleidoscope, then the original image is easier to recognize in the video by humans.

The idea is to choose something with a lot of lines and colors and details and fine patterns. The way the kaleidoscope works is to make a circle right in the middle of the images where the diameter of the circle is the distance from edge to edge on the shortest side. So that's the part of the image that shows up. I'm giving you the image requirements for a 4K video of 4406 pixels on the shortest side (SQRT(3840^2+2160^2)).

If you just want your video to be HD instead of Ultra HD (not future-proof because all new televisions are 4K these days), you can use images that are 2204 pixels on the shortest side (SQRT(1920^2+1080^2)).

I recommend that you take a futuristic long view and make a beautiful 4K Kaleidoscope Music Video that blows viewers away. My emphasis here is on CREATING the MOST REWARDING VISUAL EXPERIENCE POSSIBLE by showing off the resolution of the 4K HDTVs (like a 4K TV product demo in a store). You may decide that a blurry kaleidoscope has an emotionally softening effect that psychologically works for you and your audience. Some people INTENTIONALLY make BLURRY kaleidoscopes. I like to make DETAILED kaleidoscopes.

I'm rendering these kaleidoscopes in 4K so the idea is to use photographs that have LOTS of detail and color variety in the middle of the image where the original is super sharp and large (300 dpi stock photo for print, for example). They don't have to be fractals. That's just an example of something that has a lot of detail.

Like I said, the hard work is in finding the images. That's the HUMAN CREATIVITY and MENTAL EFFORT and ATTENTION in this CREATIVE PROCESS. Flowers always look good. Here is how you search on Google for Creative Commons flowers.

To make this demo for you and others, I spent about 5 minutes searching for this image. I went to Google Image Search and in the "Tools" section for "Usage Rights" I selected "Creative Commons license" and "color flowers" as a keyword.

The original image I downloaded was 4000x2666 pixels. There's a larger one here but when I zoomed in on it looked like it may have been scaled up. We will use this one for the tutorial here for EXAMPLE sake to cover all the bases regarding image quality.

My VideoKaleidoscope3840x2160.air application uses a circle in the middle of the input image with the diameter of the shortest side. Then it up or down-scales that circle to a diameter of 4406 pixels. That's just slightly larger than the corner-to-corner diagonal on an Ultra HD screen. In this case, since the original input image was a landscape rectangle, detail on the outer sides gets lost. This looks fine in HD but blurry in 4K because the source image was only 2666 pixels on the smallest side. It had to SCALE-UP to 4K.

This is what this flower bunch looks like as a kaleidoscope. Because of the depth of field and focus in the original picture, the flowers in the upper part of the picture and the extreme bottom left are blurry. When you choose an image, if you want your image to be the best quality, try to find an image where all the content in the image is IN FOCUS, SUPER SHARP with LOTS OF DETAIL. So, this is a great image, but it's NOT quite maxing out the AWESOME DISPLAY POWER of Ultra HD from edge-to-edge.

This one is a bit too small for 4K, so it needs to scale up. When it scales up, it looks fuzzy on the screen. That's why it's best to find a super large picture to begin with so it can be SCALED DOWN instead of SCALED UP to MAXIMIZE DETAIL. But this will give you an idea of what looks good as a kaleidoscope. It would be best if the picture was a little larger with the smallest side at least 4406 pixels.

It is NOT easy finding the OPTIMAL IMAGES. It takes a lot of ONLINE SEARCHING and RESEARCH. Tons of great pictures that are TOO SMALL to use. They have to be HUGE pictures to begin with for maximum quality 4K video. Ideally, they are stock photos designed for 300 dpi PRINT (commercial royalty-free license for about $100 per image or FREE if it's a Creative Commons license. I'll explain below.

I rendered 3600 frames for a 2 minute kaleidoscope test. Then I processed each of those 3600 frames in Adobe Photoshop to AUTOMATICALLY OPTIMIZE the CONTRAST of every individual frame.

After that was done, I imported the 3600 frames into Adobe Premiere and rendered the MP4 video in 4K (3840x2160x30p - 45 Mbps) and HD (1920x1080x30p - 26 Mbps) to share online. Rinse and Repeat for the second test using the 4406x4406 square (which has more detail). Then I uploaded the videos to my DropBox and YouTube. In this one, I took the whole 4000x2666 rectangular flower image and resized it to a perfect square of 4406x4406 pixels in Adobe Photoshop. That way I'm getting more detail and sharpness inside the inner circle. (Using ALL available width and height to squeeze the whole image into the inner circle.) I like this one better because the final product has more detail and it even looks good in 4K even though it had to be scaled up in both dimensions and the original aspect ratio is lost. You would never use a scaled-up image for a 4K TV Demo.

Basically, you drop a bunch of high resolution still pictures that have been sized to 4406x4406 into a folder.

Then, if you are on a Windows PC, you put my little _imagelist.exe program into the folder with the pictures and double-click it.

You can edit the _imageslist.xml file with Notepad. You can order the images however you want them to appear in the video.

I've included the Adobe Air executable. First, you install Adobe Air from the Installer, then you run my VideoKaleidoscope3840x2160.air application to install it.

You set the parameters for the speed of rotation and the number of wedges, then you just click the "START" button and navigate to the _imagelist.xml file and open it. That begins the slow-motion screen show. If you save screenshots, it creates everything in a giant Ultra HD window that is too big to fit on the screen. That outputs a 4K uncompressed BMP image sequence that you can import into Adobe Premiere or whatever video editing program you use that access a sequence of still images to make animations.

There is a log file (__kaleidoscope.log) that is updated with each frame as the video frames are rendered. I have little utility called LogFileViewer.exe that you can run to watch the log as it renders. When it is done, the application just closes.

Normally, once all the frames are rendered, I do an Adobe Photoshop batch process on them all to optimize the contrast. That way the information is optimized to show the fullest range of colors.
